Hawthorn is one of the most gracious residential suburbs, 6 km. east of Melbourne. The area was first settled in the late 1830s and has quickly transformed to a bustling metropolitan suburb today. The name “Hawthorn is believed to have been derived from a conversation involving Charles La Trobe who commented that the native shrubs looked like flowering Hawthorn bushes. There was also a bluestone house called “The Hawthorns” built in Creswick Street in 1843, in which the suburb’s name may have been originated with.
The suburb gives easy access to a number of private schools and is the home of Swinburne University of Technology. Shoppers and diners are spoilt for choice with a number of remarkable restaurants, hotels and major shopping centres you’ll find in the busy Glenferrie Road, Auburn Village, Burwood and Denmark roads. Hawthorn is serviced by three railway stations: Hawthorn, Glenferrie and Auburn.
